Advanced Exchanges

Making exchange rules easier to set up and manage.

Five documented, active support tickets highlighted friction with Advanced Exchanges. A non-Shopify merchant was also asking for access. I focused on making rules easier to set up and manage, with less need for support.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Hard to set up. Hard to manage.

Merchants faced two problems: choosing a valid setup and managing the rules they already had. The design also needed to support merchants using platforms other than Shopify.

MANAGEMENT / Finding a rule meant scrolling and opening entries.

SETUP / It was hard to tell which options worked together.

SETUP / Some choices were available only with certain options.

USER RESEARCH + DISCOVERY

Two tasks. Different kinds of friction.

USAGE RESEARCH

I reviewed usage data and walked through seven merchant shops. Most merchants had only a few rules; a small group managed hundreds. The list hid key details, and setup choices made it hard to understand how returned products matched to exchange options.

Alongside the usage review, five documented, active support tickets made reducing friction a priority. I focused on clearer setup choices, easier rule management, and support beyond Shopify.

SIMPLER SETUP

Make the choices—and their connections—clear.

The old setup made merchants work out which choices could be used together. I separated the product being returned from the products offered in exchange, so the relationship is easier to follow.

BEYOND SHOPIFY

A non-Shopify merchant had requested this functionality. Extending access meant making setup clear across platforms, including which options were available.

EASIER RULE MANAGEMENT

Find the right rule without opening every one.

Once rules are set up, merchants need to find and update them quickly. Search, visible rule details, and page controls make the list easier to navigate.

SEARCH + RULE CONTEXT

Find a rule and check its details in one place.

Search by name, then see which returned products and exchange options belong to the rule—all in the same row.

USER BENEFIT / Find and verify a rule with fewer detours.

PAGINATION + ROW CONTROLS

Break a long list into manageable pages.

Merchants can choose how many rules to see and move between pages instead of scrolling through the whole list.

ROWS PER PAGE / Choose how many rules to display.

PAGE NAVIGATION / Move through the rule set.

USER BENEFIT / Keep a large rule set manageable without a long scroll.

SHOPPER PREVIEW

See what shoppers will see.

A preview shows how product names appear during an exchange, so merchants can check the shopper experience while changing their settings.

CLEARER RULE NAMES

Name the rule. Keep its logic separate.

Every rule gets its own name, including tag-based rules. Merchants can recognize a rule without using its matching criteria as a label.

A rule name sits above the return and exchange settings.

DESIGN FOCUS

Less guesswork, from setup to everyday use.

Clearer setup choices and easier rule management are designed to reduce user friction and the need for support tickets. Extending the feature beyond Shopify also addresses a merchant request, helping more merchants manage exchanges with less help.
